Interview with Susie Johnson, the owner
What inspired you to start this business?
Ever since I was young, jewelry and design have been my passion, and when I look from this perspective, it took me a long time to achieve my goals. First of all, I received my bachelor of fine arts degree, and my specialty was in metals. I didn’t have any practical experience, so I started designing jewelry at home and experimenting with materials while working as a manager in a jewelry store. Soon I began promoting the pieces I made on social media and my work attracted a lot of attention. My friends and family, when they saw how talented I was, convinced me to open an online store where I can sell my jewelry. And what can I say, the rest is history, now I run a successful business, which provides high-quality pieces and I must say got this idea from Mauzie’s Fine Jewelry and Repair.
Why is your business so different?
In the beginning, it was challenging to provide something new because everything is already seen. But, when being asked this question, I like to say that techniques and skills I offer to my clients set me apart from everyone. There are so many designs out there and, in some way, they are similar, but, when you combine quality materials with an appropriate technique you get an incredible finish. All my pieces are unique, and customers have an opportunity to choose the design and materials I use for their jewelry. For instance, if a client comes and asks me for an engagement ring, he can, of course, choose from the selection I already have, or I can make him a customized ring that matches his needs.
What do you like about your job?
There is not one segment of my job that I don’t like. It gives me the maximum freedom to experiment with the designs and materials and the best part; you get to meet some fantastic people. I believe I am a lucky person because I get to do the job I love and still earn money. I am not sure many people are that fortunate. Let’s just hope everything stays the same and I that I am not obligated to change my occupation, which you never know. So far, I am enjoying my work, and I wouldn’t change it for anything in this world.
What was the biggest challenge you had to handle?
That would defiantly be a growth. Nowadays, it’s tough to reach new customers, especially when you have high competition. But, somehow, people recognized my talent and trusted my services, which makes me immensely happy. To be honest, currently, I am facing another challenge. Even though I run an online store, lately I have been thinking of opening a physical one. I have a working space at home, but I need a bigger place which will provide me more comfort. But, I will cross that bridge when the time comes.
